The Last Lament changes the way a Crossbow build thinks about momentum. Instead of judging the weapon only by its listed hit value, players need to measure how often they can keep firing, how safely they can spend life, and how much time is lost during reloads. That makes the weapon particularly relevant for players planning Path of Exile 2 Currency around a sustained ranged build rather than a single burst setup.

Why The Last Lament Matters in Real Combat

The unique Desolate Crossbow offers 250-300% increased Physical Damage, 10-20% increased Attack Speed, 40-60% reduced Reload Speed, and 5-10% Physical Damage Leeched as Life. It may also gain a 10-20% chance to load a bolt into all Crossbow skills when an enemy dies.

Those modifiers solve a practical problem that damage screenshots often hide: downtime. A rare Crossbow can show a stronger attack number while losing valuable seconds between volleys. The Last Lament is built for players who want to maintain pressure through an entire pack instead of repeatedly stopping to recover ammunition.

How the Firing Cycle Changes Your Build

The weapon becomes most effective when attack speed and reload reduction are supported by the rest of the character. Faster attacks have limited value if every sequence ends in a long pause, while reload reduction becomes more impressive once the character can fire frequently enough to exploit it.

The weapon can also prevent the final bolt from being consumed by spending 300 Life. This is not free efficiency. It turns life recovery into part of the ammunition plan, so regeneration, leech, flasks, and defensive positioning all matter. A fragile character may gain theoretical uptime but lose that advantage whenever the life payment creates an emergency.

During mapping, the bolt-on-kill effect can keep the weapon active across dense groups. Against a single boss, that benefit largely disappears, making reload timing, resource recovery, and movement much more important.

1) Build reliable life recovery before depending on the final-bolt life payment.

2) Save crafting materials until the weapon's core damage roll is worth improving.

3) Test boss uptime separately from clear speed before changing your entire build.

Upgrade Priorities and Farming Decisions

Not every improvement deserves the same investment. A sensible upgrade order is.

Increased Physical Damage for stronger hits and better leech.

Attack Speed to improve sustained output after reload downtime falls.

Reduced Reload Speed to smooth the complete firing cycle.

Bolt generation chance for more consistent mapping performance.

Physical Damage Leech for comfort and safer resource handling.

Players farming ordinary maps should value the ammunition effect more highly than players focused on pinnacle bosses. For efficient progression, compare clear speed over several zones rather than judging one pack. Keep enough materials for defensive gear, since a Crossbow upgrade cannot compensate for frequent deaths or poor resistance coverage.

When to Keep It and When to Move On

The Last Lament is a strong choice for sustained Crossbow builds, especially when the character already has reliable recovery and benefits from repeated attacks. It is less attractive for a setup designed around one heavy skill, minimal firing windows, or encounters where enemies rarely die near the player.

Before replacing it with a rare weapon, record damage across a full ammunition cycle. Include reload time, movement interruptions, life recovery, and the number of attacks completed during a typical encounter. A rare Crossbow may win on paper yet lose in practice if its slower rhythm interrupts your rotation.

Players preparing for endgame should decide whether their priority is fast mapping, boss consistency, or flexible skill swapping. The Last Lament can excel at the first goal, remain competitive at the second with careful recovery, and require more investment for the third. Plan upgrades around that role instead of chasing the highest displayed number.

Use cheap Path of Exile 2 Currency carefully when refining the weapon, and keep reserves for the defensive and recovery upgrades that make its firing cycle dependable.
